Fresh harvests, rather than shop availability

A crop appears when growers in Germany normally harvest it during that month. The calendar excludes imports and produce available only from long-term storage, heated greenhouses, or other protected methods.

Locally grown produce sold outside these harvest months may have been stored after harvest. A blank fruit or vegetable month does not mean shops have no locally grown produce.

This is a selected catalogue of common fruit and vegetables, not a complete list of every crop in Germany. Herbs, mushrooms, nuts and rhubarb are outside its scope. Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are grouped with vegetables.

Seasons vary across Germany

This is an approximate national guide, not a local crop forecast. Weather, latitude, altitude, cultivar, and farming method can shift harvest dates by several weeks. Harvests may begin earlier in warmer areas and later in cooler areas.

Verbraucherzentrale separates open-field, foil-or-fleece, greenhouse and stored produce. The catalogue keeps only open-field months, so it omits tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and salad cucumbers. Harvest timing still varies between warmer lowlands and cooler or higher areas.

Use the calendar to plan seasonal meals, then check what's being harvested by growers near you. The month ranges describe typical seasons rather than a prediction for this year's weather.

Germany calendar sources

The catalogue draws on Verbraucherzentrale's calendar for home-grown produce, using its open-field harvest periods. Read the source guide and methodology for how evidence is selected.
